Ferrum 0.2.2

The macOS build catches up, from 0.1.7 to 0.2.2. Everything in 0.1.8, 0.1.9, 0.2.1 and 0.2.2 arrives at once — Git the way VS Code has it, the terminal tab work, links you can ctrl-click, a way to send a crash report — so this is a much larger step here than the version numbers suggest. The release page has each one.

Install links from the website work now. Pressing Install in Ferrum on a plugin page brings the editor forward and offers the plugin. It never worked on a Mac before: macOS delivers a ferrum:// link as an Apple Event rather than as an argument, the handler for that landed in 0.2.1, and this is the first Mac build to carry it. Nothing is written until you say so.

The application icon sits on a white tile, like every other app in the Dock, rather than the graphite ground the Windows icon uses.

Editor

  • Ruler. A new Ruler setting under Appearance draws a line down the editor at that column, for keeping lines short. Zero for none.
  • Next and Previous Problem. F8 puts the caret on the next problem in the file and shows its message right there; ⇧F8 goes back. Both wrap at the ends and are on the Go menu.
  • The language server says what it is doing. While it indexes or loads, the status bar shows the work and how far along it is, instead of answering nothing for a minute.

Fixed

  • The Settings dialog stopped drawing at the bottom of the card, so most of Appearance and Editing could not be reached. Its pages now scroll.

Still true on a Mac

Updating from inside the editor does not finish here. The notice can appear and the download completes, but the editor hands the payload to an installer that sits beside it, and no such program is built for macOS. Installing a new Ferrum is dragging it to Applications.

The application is signed ad-hoc rather than by Apple, so macOS quarantines it after a download and refuses the first launch. Clear the flag once, and it opens normally from then on:

xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Ferrum.app

Or open it, let it be refused, and allow it in System Settings > Privacy & Security. Do not right-click and choose Open: macOS 15 removed that bypass for applications with no Developer ID.
